First of all we want to reassess the primary focus for the CIO’s beyond cost reduction, infrastructure optimization and virtualization and vendor consolidation. The primary role should be connected with Value Creation and Innovation. Certainly costs are important in the Value equation but they are only part of the story. Looking ahead to an improved economy, we want to address the importance of technology and put technology in a context of supporting the economic recovery and speed it up for the organization.

There’s an old management saying: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Many organizations face the challenge of measuring the business value of their IT investments and maximizing the business value of IT investments is the primary objective of good IT governance. A number of formal measurement methodologies exist for measuring the business value of IT. By employing a credible methodology that measures projected business value as well as the actual value delivered, organizations can significantly improve their IT investment returns. Firms should pick a methodology suited to their environment and include it as part of an overall governance framework embedded in IT portfolio management.
